Numerous SMART air curtains for the REDI shopping centre in Helsinki
In Kalasatama, near the port area of the Finnish capital, there is the largest shopping centre in Helsinki with its 64 thousand square meters and a total value of one billion euros. Situated in the REDI, the modern architectural complex designed by Pekka Helin is comprising eight red granite residential towers that rise on the metropolitan skyline. The new shopping mall – inaugurated in 2018 – is divided into five levels, one of which underground, it overlooks the seafront and has direct access to the metro to reach the nearby city centre. It hosts large shops such as Clas Ohlson, K-Supermarket, H & M and Halonen, in addition to Finland’s first We Food, several restaurants and cafés, fashion and design shops, gyms and spas. At street level, it is conjugate with a large food market. Entertainment activities are not lacking thanks to the multi-dimensional rooms of the Virtual Planet and Cinamon cinemas, FÖÖNI experience simulators and Bryga’s beautiful outdoor park built entirely on the roof of the shopping mall.
The REDI’ structure is proposed not only as a commercial and leisure area but has been designed to be an integral part of the Kalasatama urban space, a booming neighbourhood which attracts more and more inhabitants. This area, located at the intersection of the main Itäväylä and Lahdenväylä highways, is rapidly becoming one of Helsinki’s modern citizen references. The affluence of around 12 million guests was estimated in the first year of activity into the structure, with a projection of 17 million people in the next future. Therefore, it has become essential to use the latest HVAC technology for air conditioning, ventilation and heating at the heavily trafficked entrances of the towering building.
Airtècnics, a global leader in the sector, was in charge of the air curtains design and installation for the numerous access doors at the REDI shopping mall. Above each of them were installed the SMART air curtains – 135 in total – equipped with the Clever control and painted in the same grey colour as the doors.

Made with a smooth front panel and invisible upper air intake, the SMART air curtain is ideal for enhancing commercial spaces because it represents a combination of the best technological features with customizable and high-quality design. In addition to the different stages of regulation already integrated into the model, for complete management of the ventilation and heating at the REDI shopping mall entrances, this project has been completed with the Clever control. It automatically adapts the operation of the air curtains according to different needs in heating and ventilation to guarantee comfort and climate separation suitable for every environment, while offering a remarkable advantage in energy savings.
