Cooling in wind turbines

Tuesday 28 September 2021

Wind turbine power generation is increasingly being targeted by electricity utilities due to the energy transition measures adopted by the European Union. A significant part of a wind turbine's resources must be used to protect the individual components from overheating, which is why fans are used for various cooling applications in wind turbines in wind power plants.

Parque eólico, donde la aplicación de ventiladores cumplen funciones de refrigeración en los componentes

Whether it is a matter of nacelle or nacelle ventilation, switch cabinet ventilation or generator, transformer and inverter cooling: our fans are suitable for all requirements in the field of wind turbines. From onshore to offshore installations, all projects are customised and adapted 100% to the needs of each customer.

For air turbine applications, axial fans are the ideal choice for cooling wind turbine nacelles. But radial fans, and also centrifugal fans, have cooling applications in other parts of wind turbines. Years of experience have enabled us to design and manufacture fans for the highest technical requirements.

We offer flexible solutions for:

  • optimal air flow
  • minimum maintenance
  • low noise level
  • wide range of operating voltages (at 50/60 Hz)
  • variable speed for maximum operating efficiency
  • suitable for operation even under vibration and voltage peaks
  • space-saving installation due to direct drives with external rotor motors

Wide range of services for wind turbines

  • Nacelle cooling

The nacelle of a wind turbine contains many high-tech components which give off heat when in operation. The removal of this heat is necessary so that the system does not overheat and can always work at its maximum performance. Our fans of the DRA, DHA and DQ series are very well adapted to these conditions and efficiently fulfil this function.

  • Generator cooling

Kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy in the generator. During this conversion, heat is lost. This heat must be dissipated to protect the generator from overheating. Our DRA series fans or DHA fans are ideal for this task.

  • Ventilation of switch cabinets

Switch cabinets are essential for the perfect coordination of the components of a wind turbine. Here, too, sufficient heat dissipation is required to protect sensitive electrical components from overheating. The Plug Fan range, as well as the fans of the ERA series, have been specifically designed for this application.

  • Cooling of inverters and transformers

The cooling of other electronic components, such as inverters or transformers, is also no problem for our fans. It does not matter whether the cooling has to be carried out in the nacelle or in the base of a wind turbine.
