Can industrial air curtains operate in cooling mode?

Tuesday 15 July 2025

Airtècnics brings the solution for industrial air curtains to operate using direct expansion coil systems connected to heat pumps. In other words, they can now work not only in heating mode, but also with cold air.

Thanks to continuous product innovation and adaptation to customer needs, Airtècnics’ engineering team has succeeded in making the industrial air curtains in its catalogue work in cooling mode.

Industrial air curtains working for cooling

Industrial air curtains are useful in places where weather is meanly hot, and you want to control the interior temperature with a cooling part.

They can also be stores with very high doors that need a high flow rate, such as a large commercial area where the curtain is installed at 5m or more.

Industrial air curtains are very powerful, which is why they previously couldn’t operate in cold mode: the water generated by condensation of humidity, which should fall into the condensation tray, was instead projected from the coil into the unit and then outwards via the air jet, compromising its performance and causing a water spray.

In such cases, the common solution is to reduce fan speed to prevent water carryover. However, for industrial air curtains, this is not viable, as it compromises their effectiveness.

Now, thanks to a humidity control adaptation, the industrial air curtains in the Airtècnics catalogue can indeed operate with cold air without the unit being affected by condensation water.

How did we achieve this?

After a two-year project led by the R&D&I department, the study concluded that by avoiding the dew point, the formation of large amounts of condensation is prevented. This also eliminates water carryover, even while maintaining the same jet power.

The air outlet velocity is not reduced. Instead, the temperature and humidity inside the unit are precisely controlled. That’s how technical limitations are overcome—through dedicated research.

If you’re looking for reliable results to improve comfort and save energy, we have the solution. A wide product range and specialists ready to assist you with the latest technology and the highest standards of quality.
