Air curtains for explosive atmospheres

Monday 19 July 2021

In an explosive ambient caused by flammable gases, mists, vapours or combustible dusts, electronic components play a crucial role in the possibility of generating an explosion or ignition. Air curtains or any electronic device that is part of such a hazardous installation must be fully protected to ensure that people or the environment are not exposed to the danger of an explosion.

ATEX fans: solution for explosive atmosphere

ATEX motors comply with ignition protection measures. This type of protection is characterised by the fact that it prevents the possibility of high temperatures and the occurrence of sparks or electric arcs inside or outside the electrical equipment, which can lead to deflagration.

Air curtains with ATEX fans have conventionally driven fans located on the outside of the unit housing and are approved as Group II, Category 2G equipment in explosion-protected areas according to European Parliament Directive 94/9/EC.

In this case, ATEX Maxwell air curtains are intended for an environment which requires the following certification: ATEX 2G Ex de IIC T4 IP55, and withstands operating temperatures of between -20°C and +40°C.

Classification label for electronic devices for explosive atmospheres

The classification certifies that the device is suitable for industries other than mining, where the residue is gas (typically hydrogen and acetylene) or dust. Furthermore, it is suitable for areas where, during normal operation, the formation of a potentially explosive atmosphere due to the existence of air and flammable gases, vapours or mists rarely occurs or, if it does occur, only for a short period of time.
