Air curtains are an essential element of the ventilation system to ensure energy savings in building entrances. And if these air curtains are heated in a heat pump system, it makes them highly efficient devices.
Our distributor in Italy, Eurotecno, has carried out a high energy saving project by installing an Airtècnics air curtain with EC fans, connected to a heat pump system in the doorway of a Scorpion Bay men's fashion shop.

Heat pumps have the ability to transfer energy from the environment into a heat exchanger, using very little electrical energy from the mains, making it a high energy saving system with low environmental impact. Airtècnics DX air curtains incorporate a direct expansion coil that, connected to a heat pump, is offered as a low consumption alternative to the classic electric heating or hot water heating coils.
The running costs of a heat pump air curtain are lower than those of an electrically heated air curtain, as can be seen in the following example for a typical door:
  |
  |
  | Electrical air curtain | Heat pump air curtain | Diference |
Door dimension: | 2m x 3m | Total heating | 18 kW | 16 kW | 2 kW |
Working: | 12 h/d, 6 d/s, | Air curtain price | 4.724 €/ud | 7.413 €/ud | 2.689 € |
  | 26 semanas | Energetic consumption | 33.696 kWh | 29.952 kWh | 11.924,64 kwh |
Energy cost: | 0,35€ KW/h | Energetic costs | 15.482,38 € | 4.312,64 € | 11.169,74 € (72%) |
Air curtain: | ECM 2000, 16 kW | CO2 emissions | 17.694,14 kg | 4.928,73 kg | 12.765,41 kg |
COP: | 3,50 W/W anual | Installation | 500 € | 2500 € | 2000 € |
Under these conditions, it can be concluded that the payback period for the installation of a heat pump air curtain compared to electric heating elements is just over one year (13 months). A heat pump air curtain saves energy and CO2 emissions to the environment: in one year, 12,765 kg less CO2 are emitted and the economic savings are more than € 11,000.
